****RISG.ORG Member Suggested Links. If you have any links to articles you would like to have included in this weekly mailing
and on our current news page please send to jeff@risg.org. Thank you for your contributions.

These links are from Connie Abbey (in absentia). i used the archives to search for links she's mentioned in her many posts..
it goes without saying that Connie's absence is strongly felt.....

Along with Rick, Ray, Matt, Brother Dewi (+Dave) and a handful of others, these members have contributed so much..When even one is away from the Group, their absence is noticed..in the case of Connie (Granny of 9) my prayers are with her and her husband..God Bless...

have been shown to be highly effective in Crohn's disease.

I recall this second post from Connie very well and had some second thoughts about including here because it proved to be a little controversial back in March when subj of lymphoma was brought up.
.I am presently taking enbrel (etanercept) and have just begun to notice some very promising results; but want to maintain my guard now that i've entered 8th week ...I think Connie's admonition here is very important, so it's being included as a Link..

I sometimes find myself saying (to myself) that i'm going over the top in describing certain things and this may be one of those times; but i don't think so.. . So with that in mind these two websites are so valuable that no one with even the sniffles should be without them ....I remember when Ed McMahon would say "Everything you could possibly want to know , ever hope to know, is contained in this little book" (holding up a book) ...Well these two sites have similar status for me . They contain a plethora of good info on practically all aspects of athhritis and on pills, tablets, infusions,etc..Example i ran out of ibuprophen today and just found a tablet which looked like 200mg of ibuprophen; but before swallowing, i went to www.RxList.com and typed monograph ,I-2, and knew instantly it was allright to take because the imprint code said it was ibuprophen,! then went on to describe other particulars...just a great site which deserves a Link...

Search results for ' *I-2':
Each result includes the imprint code, the brand or generic name, strength, manufacturer, and description of the dosage form.
Imprint Code: I-2

Drug/Strength/Manufacturer: Ibuprofen 200mg - Murfreesboro

Description: I-2 - Brown - Round - Film Coated Tablet

***
The second site is one of the About.com sites..

i get their weekly subscription....well worth a look.

BOTHELL --- Her hand trembles as she leafs through old war photos, a sporadic quiver as inexplicable as her other symptoms: night sweats, rashes, fatigue, fleshy lumps called rheumatoid nodules that swell up around her joints.

Medical researchers are becoming increasingly convinced that the most primitive part of the immune system, usually the body's first defense against infection and injury, may play a crucial role in some of the most devastating afflictions of modern humans, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes and possibly Alzheimer's.

****Irritable Bowel Syndrome IBS

Josie had celiac disease, a chronic ailment caused by an immune reaction to gluten, a protein in wheat and several other grains.
That disease, it is becoming clear, is far more common than doctors have been taught. New research reveals celiac disease may be one of the most common genetic diseases, affecting perhaps as many as 2 million Americans. Most physicians strongly recommend the intestine be viewed and biopsied through a fiber-optic endoscope to confirm the diagnosis before a person embarks on a gluten-free diet, which is very hard to follow for a lifetime.

Links to Depression and the Spondys

Unfortunately, along with chronic pain and other symptoms which limit mobility and independence, comes Depression and Anxiety..It's not always the case and length of illness plays a determing role..But generally speaking depression is often part of collateral damage for those who live with spondyloarthropathies .

About 15 years ago i got a call from one of my oldest friends and much to my surprise he asked if i'd ever had been depressed?..He confessed that he'd been experiencing some dark moments and general "Blue" feelings..I was stunned and said, no, i had never had any such feelings..not ever..Two facts quickly....My friend was about 60 at time..while i was 47 yr old and even then had pronounced symptoms, esp eyes..but no diagnosis of Reiter's .

That was then...this is Now..I'm presently taking medicine for both depression and anxiety..Thing is, i didn't know i was depressed or suffering anxiety..One day about 4 yrs ago, i got very upset with one of my doctors..i just blew up over something which was really minor..fortunately this person had been practicing for about 30 yrs and made it clear that she was scheduling appt with outpatient psych and was told "you will keep appointment..It was not optional" i owe so much to that Dr ..Because of her i was diag properly with depression as well as anxiety...I don't know exactly when the change took place but somewhere in last 7 or 8 yrs symptoms of Reiter's (Reactive Arthritis) caught up with me..I take sertraline and lorazepam and both have helped tremendously..
Here are some good links for recognizing and dealing with depression..

Since one of the hallmarks of our respective spondy's is often pain, chronic and otherwise, it seemed worthwhile to highlight a few links...

This is one of the most comprehensive sites covering all aspects of chronic.pain..the author is Lois Randall, who among many other things, developed the Randall pain scale.. The site is a must see for anyone struggling against pain, chronic or otherwise.

I pasted just a few of her own words under heading "Who am I"

Who: My name is Lois Randall. I'm a 60 year old woman who became disABLEd following a back injury 18 years ago. Since then I've had 4 major low back surgeries. Although these were successful in reducing my leg symptoms for a time, I had a failed fusion and my pain increased to a point where I had to make serious and committed changes to my attitude as well as to my lifestyle. Some of these "adjustments" were voluntary, others weren't.
After doing a lot of research, I created InfoMIN to provide others with a web site that puts what I consider to be good chronic pain, illness, and disability information and resources together all in one place. I hope these resources will provide the kind of information and support that will help others learn to live with chronic pain and still maintain a good quality of life.

http://www2.rpa.net/~lrandall/index.html

And these further pain sites have helped a lot of people...

No collection of links to pain sites would be complete without including "ChronicPain at YahooGroups" many of RISG members share membership with ChronicPain..The moderators are Linda Darwent, Ray Neal (Ray in Virginia), and John Hower .

Study Sheds Light On Psoriatic Arthritis new
When drugs were approved last year to treat a lesser-known form of arthritis, doctors didn't know why the medications worked or, even more important, why the disease causes bones to erode. While a new research project answers both questions, the Found by: Newsday.com

This link found by Connie has a tremendous amount of relavence for me in a very personal way..Had this survey on incidence of both HLA-B27 positive and HLA-B27 negative genes been avail in mid-80's i would have been diagnosed a full 10yrs earlier than the '95 diag i finally got..i had a 'hotshot' (hosp words) out of Harvard Medical..he was infect disease specialist but told my other drs at st johns that he knew exactly what disease i had based on symptoms..He asked me to take blood test to confirm his findings and then treatment could start..He called me at home shortly after and said he was wrong about diagnosis..he said unfortunately blood test was Negative..i didn't know name of test for several years when i learned it was HLA-B27 gene test..

Possibly the most painful and baffling aspect of Reiter's and Ankylosing (and to a lesser extent other spondy's) is the way the disease manifests itself through urinary tract.symptoms.For years i've had eye symptoms as well as urinary..i use to say i didn't know which was worse..well i finally decided, urinary just because of the level of pain and fact that so little can be done for it in any meaningful way...plus there is so much ignorance and misunderstanding..i wish these articles on urethritis and prostatitis had been written 20yrs ago.it would have made a
difference..but even today causes and descriptions and etiology are
poorly understand..read these articles and next time your doctor says something like,' you couldn't possibly have prostatitis because there is no infection', you will be able to politely rebutt that position because it is totally false....read on

I noticed there are several Spanish-speaking members of the group recently.
I thought this new website might be of interest to them:
http://www.genome.gov/sglossary.cfm It's too bad the press release for the website was in English. Our government's a little slow on the uptake sometimes.Janet in SF

The Spanish "Talking Glossary of Genetics" is available
free on NHGRI's Web site at
. The genetics
glossary is an innovative combination of text,
illustrations and audio commentary in an accessible, user-
friendly format. Students, teachers, medical professionals,
librarians, journalists and others will discover easy-to-
understand explanations of key genetics terms.

Beyond its standard dictionary-style definitions, the
glossary also includes in-depth audio clips -- spoken
explanations -- provided by Spanish-speaking genetic
researchers. The audio clips can be heard in RealAudio, a
common audio player compatible with most Internet browsers.
The player can be downloaded for free on the glossary page
at the NHGRI Web site.

"It's a bit like having your own private genetics teacher
available anytime you wish to explain the definition of
genetic terms such as pedigree, DNA or chromosome," said
Jeff Witherly, director of NHGRI's Office of Science
Education, which managed the Spanish glossary project and
its English counterpart.

In addition to the online version, NHGRI is also making the
Spanish glossary available, free of charge, as a limited
edition CD-ROM, to libraries and educators without access
to the Internet. The CD-ROM works in both Windows and
Macintosh formats.
